I’ve been a DJ for a while now and always thought I had it in me to produce some sick hip hop beats but didn’t know where to start. Should I try sampling something on a keyboard, go to a studio and throw something down or is there some good software out there that I could use.
I started with the keyboard, it was ok but it didn’t have the exact sounds I wanted, plus there was the problem of how to record it and how to get all the beats at the same time. It was just never going to be the hip hop beat maker I was looking for.
I looked into hiring a studio and initially it seemed a lot of money. Luckily a fellow DJ had an afternoon booked to make some beats, so I went along and watched to see what you get for your money. Honestly, it was great, but I had no idea what he was doing and what all the damn buttons were for. This would be great if you had loads of experience plus you need to have a good idea of the beats you want to record or you just waste the time messing around without producing beats. Would recommend this if you were more established and wanted to release something but costs too much for me!!
Finally I started to check out beat making programs on the internet to see what there was out there. I looked at a lot and they looked good but cost a shit load of cash, not happening!! There are also some cheap nasty ones or free ones, they were all a waste of time, didn’t have good sounds, poor quality recordings, hard to use…. It just went on and on so really don’t waste your time!!
I eventually found Dub Turbo which I have been using for about a month now. It is a shit hot piece of beat making software. There are loads of sounds, samples functions to get just what you want out of it. I found it dead easy to use and they have loads of videos showing you what to do.
If you are looking for beat making programs then I suggest you get on it!!!
